We catch up with our former Stage Manager, Matthew Newcombe

By -

As we enter 2021 we caught up with Matthew Newcombe, who left Musicality Academy last Summer to start a three year BA(hons) degree in Stage Management at The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

Mattew told us:

I am absolutely loving it! I was lucky that for most of the Autumn term, teaching was face to face and very little of it online. It has been so interesting having different lectures and learning new ways of doing things.

Matthew was Deputy Stage Manager for his first project on the course, which was all based around a haunted house. The students had to design and create a set with special effects, lighting, sound and props etc. On this occasion we are proud to say that the set (pictured below) was designed in the main, by Lewis Bamford who was also a member of our fabulous stage crew at Musicality and who also started the course in September!

Bristol Old vic Project

In addition to the Haunted House poject, we helped with ‘Hedda’, which was a production by another year group. This was such an excellent experience and it took place on the main stage at the Bristol Old Vic, so it was very exciting!

It was lovely to catch up with Matthew and we are hoping that it wont be too long before we can meet up properly and he can pop into one of our classes. Many of our past students keep in touch and call back in to visit which is really inspiring for our younger pupils…We are sure that Matthew will be no exception!

We wish Matthew and Lewis the best of times at Bristol, be it online or in the classroom!
